Core Web Vitals Explained Simply: LCP, INP and CLS

What Google’s Core Web Vitals measure, what good scores look like, and the quick fixes that improve them most.

Core Web Vitals are three numbers Google uses to judge how a page feels to real visitors. They come from people using Chrome, not a lab, which is why they're hard to fake and worth fixing.

The three numbers

MeasureWhat it meansGood
LCP, Largest Contentful PaintHow long until the main content showsUnder 2.5 s
INP, Interaction to Next PaintHow quickly the page reacts to a tap or clickUnder 200 ms
CLS, Cumulative Layout ShiftHow much things jump around while loadingUnder 0.1

Fix LCP

  • Serve the main image in WebP or AVIF, at the size it's shown.
  • Don't lazy-load the image at the top of the page. Preload it instead.
  • Use a CDN and keep your server's first response fast.

Fix INP

  • Remove scripts you don't need. Chat widgets and trackers add up.
  • Defer the rest so they don't block the first screen.
  • Break long JavaScript tasks into smaller ones.

Fix CLS

  • Set width and height on every image and video.
  • Reserve space for ads and embeds before they load.
  • Load web fonts with font-display: swap and similar fallback fonts.

Our page speed checker shows your real-visitor scores where Chrome has data, and flags the images and scripts slowing you down.
