The Best Free SEO Tools in 2026, and What Each Is For

A short, honest list of the free SEO tools worth using in 2026: what each does best, where it stops, and how to combine them.

You can do serious SEO without paying for a subscription. The trick is knowing which free tool to use for which job. Here's the set we'd use, starting with our own because it's the one that does the most without a login.

1. SEO for Free: the all-round checker

Best for: a complete audit of any site in seconds, with no sign-up. 83 checks, AI search visibility, share previews, competitor comparison, and fixes that can be applied automatically once you create a free account.

Where it stops: it can't see your private Google data on its own. Connect Search Console in the free plan to add rankings and clicks.

2. Google Search Console

Best for: what Google itself says. The searches you appear for, your clicks, indexing problems and manual actions. Every site owner should have it.

Where it stops: it only shows your own verified sites, and it tells you what is wrong far more often than how to fix it.

3. Bing Webmaster Tools

Best for: the same job for Bing, which also feeds several AI assistants. Setup takes minutes if you import from Search Console.

4. PageSpeed Insights

Best for: Google's own speed test, with real-visitor data where Chrome has enough of it. We use the same data source in our reports.

5. Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free version)

Best for: crawling a site from your own computer. The free version stops at 500 addresses and needs a desktop install.

6. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools

Best for: backlink data on your own sites. You need to prove you own the site before you see anything.
